Keeping Contact with the Sick & Housebound

Keeping contact with, and taking the sacraments to those who can no longer easily come to Mass.

For many, there come a time when it is no longer easy to get out and about and come to Mass. The Church rightly goes to them in that case.

Most importantly the Church takes the Blessed Sacrament of the Body of the Lord to the housebound, and when needed, priests go to hear the confessions of those who are not able to come to church.

Those who take the Blessed Sacrament to the housebound include the priests, but there is no reason why they alone should carry out this role. In our parish the deacons in particular carry out a lot of these visits, but in the past the baptised faithful have also done this.

In the near future it will become more urgent for the baptised volunteer to take the sacrament to the housebound as the number of priests available for this is reduced. At the moment there are around 45 people who receive the sacrament at home in our parish.

Besides this, many of the baptised keep in touch and visit the housebound which is an important role and ministry.

Two particular examples of this, besides the ordinary housebound, are the visits the parish makes to those in the hospital and those in the prison. More volunteers are always welcome to help with all these ministries. If you think you could be of service in this area, click here.
