Exeter's Catholic History

Exeter has a long and mixed history of Christianity. From the Roman times, there has been Christian worship in Exeter, and the Catholic faith flourished until the Reformation. During the disruption of the penal years, there was a limitation on the practice of the faith, but the valiant efforts of individuals like Dr George Oliver ensured the continuation of Catholic worship until the Church's restoration in the nineteenth century. In the late part of that century, Sacred Heart Church was built, and the church has been a centre of worship in Exeter and the surrounding area since.
